This is going to excite a lot of people, but anger many. Are you ready? The BlackBerry Thunder, as it is codenamed now, (all you "reporting" on it as the Storm are incorrect) will launch in Q3 of this year. It is a full touchscreen BlackBerry — no slide out keyboard — with only 4 physical keys. Those are the send / end phone keys, the BlackBerry menu key, and the back key. Here is the most interesting part, though: it will launch as a worldwide lifetime exclusive on Verizon and Vodafone! We’ve heard the unit will be a hybrid device with CDMA EV-DO Rev. C (for clarification, Rev C., known as UMB is practically dead. If the device will indeed launch with a 4G solution, our bet is on LTE), and GSM HSPA for traveling internationally. Verizon and Vodafone will have the same unit. Currently, the model number is the BlackBerry 9500, though it’s very early and that’s likely to change. This is HUGE for the Verizon lovers. For once they’ll get an exclusive device, but Verizon will have a sales quota for the device and if they don’t meet those numbers, we’ve heard the exclusivity will then dissolve and it’s over. This will be extremely interesting to see play out.

"I’m still clinging to my BlackBerry,” Obama said Wednesday in an interview with CNBC and The New York Times. "They’re going to pry it out of my hands."

Those words are worth a small fortune to Research In Motion, which makes the Blackberry, in terms of free marketing with estimates put at between $25m and $50m. Might seem high, but he's the most talked about man on the planet and his reach is global. Why hire Jerry Seinfeld like Microsoft did for millions of dollars when you luck upon Obama for free?

Doug Shabelman, the president of Burns Entertainment, told the NY Times: "This would be almost the biggest endorsement deal in the history of endorsements. He’s consistently seen using it and consistently in the news arguing - and arguing with issues of national security and global welfare - how he absolutely needs this to function on a daily basis."

He's a natural geek. He's just run the most tech savvy YouTube and Facebook friendly presidential election campaign and he's even this week helping Marvel shift a bumper amount of Spiderman after making the front cover (in some story about two Obamas - and evil Obama? Say it ain't so).

Although I'm not sure it's entirely intentional, of course, Obama and his people must know that being associated with such a product that is at the cutting edge of mobile technology says a lot about the President elect: that not only is he tech savvy (The Whitehouse 2.0), but he has so many friends and people wanting to get in touch with him underscoring his popularity and almost making him seem available and like you and me.

Slate even has a long piece on why Obama should be allowed to keep his Blackberry. There's probably a Facebook group, but it's banned at work still following all the virus stuff last year so really I've no way of knowing. Somone should set up a group. Save Obama's Blackberry - maybe one for RIM's agency.

Sadly, RIM and no one else is ever going to get to write the campaign that would feature Obama. Although some have had a go: "If Blagojevich can pick my replacement, I can pick my device".

If Apple had picked up on it quicker, maybe back on the campaign trail, you could have imagined an iPhone ad suggesting "Time for change Mr Obama - it's an iFuture".

For RIM this has all come as its BlackBerry Bold has been suffering technical problems with Orange talking of pulling the phone because of persistent problems including dropped calls and poor reception. This has resulted in "uncharacteristically high" return rates.

If anyone can fix it Obama can. Maybe someone could ask him if he ever gets a dropped call? I'm guessing not.

Say what you want about patent infringement suits, but at least the BlackBerry case has drama.

A federal judge, clearly impatient with the long-running case, could issue an injunction soon on U.S. sales and service of the wireless e-mail device.

Most patent suits are dismissed or settled long before they reach this stage. Remarkably, neither BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. nor tiny patent holder NTP Inc. have shown signs of backing down. In effect, they’re daring each other to blink first and settle.

Looks rather interesting, especially if you add an optical touchscreen, that RIM has been working on for a while too.

Will such a device become part of the new upcoming Blackberry 9000 series? I have no idea.

But it would certainly be an interesting Blackberry to play with.

Us Crackberry-addicted chaps in the UK will be happy to know that RIM and Vodafone will be launching the latest in the 8000 series over here very soon. Hip hip hurrah for Royal Britannia, etc.

The BlackBerry 8707v has the same 320x240 colour LCD screen as the 8700, as well as the dedicated Send and End keys and programmable key on the left of the body. The feature that makes the 8707v important is that it’s the very first BlackBerry to ever come with a built-in 3G modem; its USB and Bluetooth connectivity will finally make it easy for laptops without PCMCIA slots to use 3G on the go.

The 8707v operates quad-band, 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, making it usable in Europe, Asia and North America.

phone mobileAfter months of online speculation, rumor and badly photoshopped innuendo, Research in Motion announced its new BlackBerry Bold today.

RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis stopped by the Wired offices last week and gave us some one-on-one time with an early version of the Bold. It's, well, kind of awesome. I'm by no means a BlackBerry fanboy, but the Bold has some impressive features.

First off the big news:

* HSDPA: We tried it out in G-Lab HQ and were able to load several graphic-heavy sites quickly with the BlackBerry Bold's fast 3G data access. A few hiccups occurred when pulling up Wired.com's front page, but keep in mind this was also a beta unit. Mike assured us they're still ironing out all the bugs and final units would not have any issues.
* Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/ compatibility: No n spec, but that's no biggie. Having nearly unrestricted Wi-Fi access will make this BlackBerry even more useful.
* Half-VGA, 480 x 320 pixel screen: The screen itself is gorgeous, bright and colorful. We watched the seizure-inducing trailer for Speed Racer and it was gorgeous and glitch-free. Too bad we can't say the same for Speed Racer itself.
* Built-in GPS: Paired with location-based services plus BlackBerry Maps, you'll also be able to use it while making a phone call. Try that while driving and see if you can avoid crashing your car.

have announced the BlackBerry Curve 8900, or BlackBerry Javelin is now available. The main specs (as we covered before here) are:

* Hi-res 460×360 HVGA+ display
* Walkman player
* 3.2 megapixel camera
* Built in GPS Navigation
* Media UI with auto rotate
* 3D and motion gaming

This appears to be available on two main tariffs:

* Phone free, £55 per month (18 month contract), 1500 minutes and “unlimited” 3000 texts, plus “unlimited” mobile internet and webmail.
* Phone costs £48.48, £35 per month (18 month contract), 600 minutes and “unlimited” 3000 texts, plus “unlimited” mobile internet and webmail.

Please note: despite the website not providing any details, it appears the “unlimited” mobile internet has a Fair Usage Policy, which we suspect is Vodafone’s standard 500MB per month. As you can see above, we prefer wherever possible to give the exact capped figure, and not use the term unlimited, as we feel it’s not giving the complete picture.

We think this may well outsell the BlackBerry Storm as it will appeal to the more traditional BlackBerry user, who wants a real QWERTY keyboard to use. Making this phone available to consumers will help get Vodafone marketshare.
